Buckingham Athletic have had an impressive start to the season with three wins out of three, most recently against Brimsdown. The club enjoyed an 8th place finish last season but with this start to the campaign, they could be set for an improvement on their league standings. After the first three games they now sit happy at the top of the league.

‘The Ath’ started strongly and managed to keep their momentum from their previous games to overwhelm their opponents in North London. The side managed to take the lead and then double it when Frankie Tarrant and Sid Hawkins and go into half time 2-0. This sent hem on their way to a third successive three points.

The second half saw Mark Carter’s side lose some focus and with a slow start they gave away two sloppy goals in the space of three minutes and suddenly Brimsdown were back in it. Fortunately, Buckingham Athletic had a response and managed to get themselves in front again, when the impressive 16 year old Robbie Carter scored his first goal for the first team, and then Jack Menday scored another free kick, his second in three games to make it 4-2. Brimsdown were not giving up and you sensed they had a bit of character about them as they reacted to going two goals behind again when they brought it back to 4-3.

But the game soon became comfortable for ‘The Ath’ when an opponent was shown red after bringing Robbie Carter down just outside the box when the youngster seemed to be clear on goal. As I said, the game was comfortable and Buckingham could move the ball around and start enjoying their good style of play once again. They secured the victory with an own goal and Rio Oshima finished the proceeding with the 6th and earned himself man of the match for his impressive work rate and ability on the ball, he has been a bright spark at the start of the season and looks to be a good addition to the side.

Overall the game was impressive but it is still early days in the season and Mark Carter recognises where improvements can be made, “I’m very pleased with our overall game but we need to cut out the sloppy errors, but we are pleased with the way we carried on going when conceding two quick goals at the start of the second half.” It is key to identify where to improve still if this side will go on to great things and with the start they have had, they have made life a bit easier and taken some pressure off of themselves.

Manager, Carter, pinpointed the role of Sid Hawkins and Rio Oshima, the latter playing a vital workhorse role in midfield and Hawkins managing to put himself about up front and cause problems for the centre halves. Both even got on the score-sheet.

The whole side managed to play well and was a team performance but picking one man for man of the match it would be Rio Oshima for his effort and skill in the final third, now onto Kensington Borough on Saturday.

Jack Menday was again on the score-sheet from a free-kick
