Larry Woodward’s Development side were looking to cause an upset by taking points off of top of the league, St. Margaretsbury, when they hosted their second game of the season. The game was not the way they would have wanted as a lack of concentration in defence caused them to drop points and still have 1 point from an opening two games.
The game was actually very evenly matched for the first 25 minutes as neither side could take the lead but Buckingham were showing no sign of naivety against the strong side. The lapse in concentration was unveiled when St. Margaretsbury scored two quick goals to take full control of the game. However, it wasn’t for long as Jamie Carter’s neat solo goal was to half the deficit and that was his first goal of the new season. Larry Woodward’s side couldn’t level the game before the break but they were right in it now after that goal.
The second half was much of the same, a lack of goals until the away side took advantage of sloppy defending and punished Athletic with another quick two goals. With the game at 4-1 it looked to be out of reach. With 15 minutes to play Buckingham got a goal back through an own goal off a corner to cut the be within two of their opponents. A late goal from Jordan Tavener was just a consolation with 30 seconds left as they failed to put themselves back in the game to take a point.
Standout performers on the day were Richard Tiller and Sam Oxley as it could have been a larger difference between the sides without them.
