Buckingham Athletic had hit a rough patch for the first time heading into the game against top of the table, and unbeaten, Thame United. The game never looked anything but comfortable for the hosts, Buckingham Athletic, as they would go on to humiliate their opponents 5-0. They also get themselves back into contention for the league title with that win having lost to Henley Town a few weeks ago.
On the front foot from the first minute, Buckingham Athletic managed to put on early pressure and create chances where they looked to get the opener. They did get the first when a corner was only half-cleared as it landed to Rey Maki, whose volley went nicely into the bottom corner. The second didn’t take long to follow when Ben Acquaye’s solo run was completed by a stunning finish from just outside the area to score his third league goal of the season. They continued to dominate the first half and deservedly went into half time two up.
The second half continued on the same theme as Athletic kept the same tempo to try and win the game comfortably. The lead was extended to three when Jordan Tavener scored his first league goal of the season, following three cup goals, as he broke through the defence and finished into the far right corner. The forward then broke through again minutes later and was taken down by the Thame keeper to claim a penalty, which he took himself and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to put his side 4-0 up.
The game was capped off by an outstanding volley from debutant, Jamie Sylvester, who smashed past the keeper from 20 yards to wrap up the points. The side kept their first clean sheet in this game as they managed a solid performance against a free-scoring Thame side. The title looks possible again.
