Derby Disappointment for Athletic

The second and final league Derby of the season between Buckingham Athletic’s and Winslow’s Development teams took place on Saturday, after the 1-1 draw earlier in the season. With both side struggling for form in the early part of the season, it was a crucial game, not just because of the local feud, but to the points that were at stake in order to climb the table.

Athletic couldn't manage to take control of the game at any stage and Winslow looked more dangerous going forward throughout the encounter. With more physical players, the hosts, Winslow seemed far more of a threat in 50/50’s and set pieces. The first half was evenly split, with the best chance for Athletic coming to Tom Kennard, who couldn't find the net from a free header.

Winslow took the lead after around 25 minutes when good footwork earned Winslow a penalty which was converted calmly sending the keeper the wrong way. The game was not out of sight, and Buckingham were back level just a few minutes later when Ricky Brown’s long range effort went straight into the top corner. Both sides went into half time settled, but not entirely happy with their performances.

The second half was less convincing for Buckingham as they struggled to create many chances, something that has damaged their form recently, and they again went behind when I lifted ball into the ball somehow found its way in. It was very unclear how it occurred but the keeper struggled to claim the ball and it was scrambled in. The remainder of the game was Winslow seeing it out and they secured the win they wanted.

A disappointing result for Buckingham Athletic, who now host a tough Stotfold side on Saturday, hoping to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.
