Buckingham Athletic’s development team were in a good run of form, now stretching to four games without defeat since the derby defeat to Winslow at the start of November. Larry Woodward’s side this time drew 1-1 to Harpenden Town, and are now in a respectable eighth in the league.
It was not the greatest performance of the season from Buckingham but still managed to keep their unbeaten run in tact as they still put in a decent performance. The first half was reasonably average from the hosts as they failed to create many chances, with nine trouble the keeper too much. The closest they came was when Jamie Carter forced a mistake from the keeper as he came out of his goal, but couldn't pick out a pick or convert to take the lead.
The hosts ended up going in at half time disappointed as they conceded late in the half to go one down from a lack of concentration and an easy finish from a cross. The second half saw a change in thought for Buckingham as they committed more men forward to try and get at their opponents more and to grab a goal. The came became more open and it looked more likely that they would go on to equalise.
The first half an hour was frustrating as Jordan Tavener and Janie Carter both went close to equalising but couldn't convert from fantastic balls from Frankie Tarrant. The goal came late on when five minutes from time, Athletic one a free kick just inside the Harpenden half. Dan McAndrew floated a ball in, which was flicked on by Tom Kennard, on the edge of the box and it fell to Jordan Tavener, who kept he ball in the air and managed to bundle the ball into the back on the net from his knee.
Man of the match went to Dan McAndrew for his defensive solidity and not allowing Harpenden to go further ahead however centre back partner Kieran Cozens was also on form. They now face Wing in the county cup last 16, looking to enter the quarter finals.
