Top 10 Signings of the Season

With the transfer record being broken in the summer for an amount spent in one window, the Premier was destined to have some success come from the amount of business being done. The world record fee was also broken for Paul Pogba but he doesn't feature on this list of the best signings of the season. But who has really been the biggest successes of the campaign so far, we take a look at the top ten signings of the summer window.

10. Nathan Redmond

The former Birmingham and Norwich winger has been a promising prospect for England over the last few years but it is this season with Southampton that he has started to show his potential may not be too far away. With Claude Puel deploying him as a centre forward on occasions and then also as a winger, he has thrived from playing in a team with more quality rather than being the main man as relegation fighters. He may have seen a red card against Spurs but that was a blip in an exciting start to the season, and the door to the England Senior team is now starting to be knocked on.

9. Matt Phillips

Joining from QPR, the Scot has struggled to stand out in teams that have been poor Premier League sides, just like Redmond, and he has also benefited from a better and more structured side under the guidance of Tony Pulis. With the signing of Nacer Chadli being hyped up in the Midlands, his transfer went under the radar but it is in fact Phillips who has managed to light up the Hawthorns with 4 goals and 8 assists so far this campaign. He is now thriving in a West Brom side looking to crack the top half and possibly look at a seventh place finish, rivalling Southampton and Everton.

8. Joel Matip

With much needed improvement in defence at Liverpool, Matip has shown himself to be a steal as a free agent as he has propelled himself as possibly the best defender at the club. The most notable way of seeing what he has brought is from the games he has missed as the reds conceded three on the opening day at Arsenal and then two at Burnley the following week without the Cameroonian there to keep them out. With Klopp now pushing Liverpool into a title race, Matip will be a key figure in trying to catch Chelsea at the top of the table.

7. Joe Allen

Leaving Liverpool in the summer ensured Allen would have a higher chance of game time at Stoke City. His impressive performances at the Euros gave the Potters much more optimism going into the new season. With Wilfried Bony not being as prolific as Mark Hughes would have liked, Joe Allen has given them the goals they needed to get some vital points after a poor start to the season. Stoke are still waiting for their better players to start performing this season, but Allen is one of those who has really hit the ground running.

6. Calum Chambers

Going under the radar, and possibly a shock inclusion into this list is the Arsenal loanee, Calum Chambers. With Ben Gibson receiving a lot of the praise for Middlesbrough due to the links with a move to Chelsea, Chambers has not been in the limelight, but the two have actually produced a fantastic partnership in front of Victor Valdes. The side have only conceded 22 goals this season, which is less than all the clubs outside of the top six, and also less than Liverpool and the same as Manchester City and Arsenal. If they could score more goals, they could be a fantastic shout for a mid-table finish come the end of the season.

5. Victor Wanyama

An already solid Spurs side added Wanyama in the summer for a cheap £12million due to him only having a year left on his contract at Southampton. Conceding the joint least amount of goals in the Premier League last season, they have the best defensive record in the league this season conceding just 14 in 20 games. Wanyama has been the barrier in front of the defence and has de-throned Eric Dier at times as the best defensive midfielder at the club. Also popping up for two goals this season, he seems a fantastic addition to a side, potentially again challenging for the title, but definitely challengers for the top four.

4. Shkodran Mustafi

Just like Matip, Mustafi entered the Premier League from abroad with the expectation of improving the defence, but in the Germans case he was replacing club captain and compatriot, Per Mertesacker. Mustafi was needed at the Emirates in order to add to the quest for a first league title in 13 years. The results have no doubt picked up since he came from Valencia as he is still yet to lose a game for the club. They may be faltering in the title race at the moment but he could be one of the players to guide the club to a more convincing challenge.

3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Some doubts were in place over the Swede when he arrived in the summer with age not on his side and when he went through a rough patch he was written off. But coming in as a free agent and now the second top scorer in the league, behind Diego Costa, he is showing why he has been touted as one of the worlds best strikers for the last decade. With Manchester United’s results picking up again, and back in contention for a finish in the top four, he has the pressure to fire them to success. I could have gone with Paul Pogba in this list but he disappointed too much at the start of the campaign not to warrant his his price tag.

2. Sadio Mane

Some people thought Liverpool overpaid for Mane at the start of the season, paying £34million to bring him to Anfield. However, with Liverpool second in the table and the Senegal international playing a huge role in that, he is repaying every penny spent on him. He may be going to the African Cup of Nations this month and that will test Liverpool to see how much they will miss him. He perfectly fits the system that the German likes to play, with a high press with energy, and he is exactly the player Klopp likes, and that is why he made the owners fork out so much money for him. He is Liverpool's top scorer this season with nine and has also added 4 assists. He could be the man to put them into the title crown.

1. N’Golo Kante

The small Frenchman was the unglamorous hero to Premier League Winners Leicester last season and was many peoples player of the season. There was no surprise that Chelsea came calling for the player that held together the most unlikely title win, and was an integral part of a French side including many superstars in the Euros. He has fitted straight into the side and has made Chelsea title favourites in their midfield. He could go on to win two titles in a row with two different sides which would be remarkable. Narrowly missing out on breaking the league record for consecutive wins, they still matched the fantastic record of 13 with Kante being the glue in the centre of the park. He could play a huge role in this team for years to come with his high energy and could be one of the signings of the decade if they go on to win the title, perhaps not as much as his move to Leicester though.
