A high scoring fixture was in show at Stratford Fields on Saturday as Buckingham Athletic entertained their supporters with a thrilling 4-3 win against Chesham United Reserves. The first half was packed with goals and that aided Buckingham in their attempt to secure a win and extend their unbeaten run to three games.
Buckingham started the game well and took an early lead as top scorer Robbie Carter scored the opener with his eleventh goal of the season. A lack of defensive solidity played a big part in the game for both teams, but Buckingham conceded the equaliser just ten minutes after scoring.
Buckingham managed to retake the lead after Carter was fouled in the box, which led to Neil King converting the subsequent penalty. Again Buckingham found themselves level as they conceded another equaliser through a good goal from the visitors. The game looked to be all square going into the break but Sid Hawkins popped up with a quick-fire double just before the whistle in order put his side 4-2 up.
The second half saw Athletic drop their standards slightly and struggled to play the same way they had in the first half, which put then in the driving seat. The tie look wrapped up for the first half an hour of the second half, but with the visitors reducing the deficit to 1 goal, 15 minutes from time, the pressure was on the hosts to hang on.
Buckingham held on for the 4-3 win, which now takes them to eleventh in the league, where they sit exactly half way in the league table. Next for them is Southall at home on Saturday, whom they sit 6 points behind.
