A good cup run and that was full of optimism of continuing in the competition has unfortunately ended for Buckingham Athletic’s development team after they were subject to a heavy defeat to Olney Reserves in a 5-2 loss at Stratford Fields. A poor first half and failure to learn from their mistakes ultimately threw Buckingham out of the cup and they kid pay their attention back to the league.
With an optimistic, yet far from impressive first 15 minutes, Buckingham looked far from on form and struggled to carve out many opportunities in the first phases of play. Their besy chances ended up coming to Antonio Belardo from the edge of the box where he couldn’t test the keeper, and also when Tom Kennard’s shot fell to Jamie Carter, he couldn’t convert passed the keeper from a few yards.
The first of three first half goals for Olney came from the spot when a winger broke through on goal, only to be taken down by Richard Tiller in goal, where it seemed like the player was always looking to get the penalty rather than take his chance. The second and third came soon after when Buckingham became helpless to cut backs from the wingers and saw themselves quickly three down in the first half.
The second half did not see much of an improvement either as they then went five down even quicker when a couple of crosses were causing ever-rising problems for Athletic. With the game now beyond them, it just did not seem to be going their way, and it was as if nothing was going to click and none of the players turned up. It furthered seemed it was not their day when Jordan Tavener’s spot kick was saved by the keeper but they did soon get their consolation.
Jordan Tavener did get the goal back though when Tom Kennard’s good pressing and square ball handed a tap in for the youngster. It was again Tavener who struck a second back when again it was Kennard pressing along with Jamie Carter as they bundled the ball toward Tavener who finished his second and tenth of the season. With a disappointing 5-2 defeat they now need to get back into form in the league where they lost 4-1 last week to Stotfold.

A bad day at the office saw Buckingham slump to defeat
