Buckingham Athletic’s Development team made things hard for themselves on Saturday after they failed to convert enough chances to see off Wodson Park at Stratford Fields in the Spartan South Midlands Development League. They managed to limit their opponents to few chances but struggled in front of goal themselves as they could only take a point from this game with a 1-1 draw.

Buckingham have dipped in for since the turn of the year, and have failed to pick up three points in any of their games in the 2017. The trend continued as they failed to convert any chances in the first half despite plenty of opportunities from set pieces where Jack Menday’s balls in were never finishing in the back of the net. On a couple of occasions these free-kicks that were put into the box came close to being put away, but the closest they came was a couple of off target headers from Tom Kennard and Adam Judd not quite reaching the ball at the back post following a flick on.

Despite almost all of the play being in the Wodson Park half, the visitors dealt the first blow as they capitalised on their hosts giving the ball away in the middle of the pitch. They took the lead and went in to the break with an undeserved lead, that Athletic felt extremely disappointed in conceding due to the large amount of pressure coming from them.

In the second half, Buckingham continued to look for a goal and it just wasn’t their day as Kennard again came close, but didn’t get the contact he would have wanted on a snap shot. They did find a route back into the game though when debutant Juyin Oluwayemi completed a bit of close dribbling with a smart finish into the far corner. The goal gave Buckingham a platform to go on to win this game and it seemed they would as the wingers got more into it and the game began to open up.

The biggest chance for Buckingham to win this game came in the final couple of minutes as some good pressing from Jamie Carter and Tom Kennard put Carter one-on-one with the keeper, but for the forward to drag his shot wide and ultimately sum up the performance from them. This is their fourth game without a win now and they travel to Hadley on Saturday hoping to end that, with their upcoming opponents sitting 5th in the league.
