Buckingham Athletic fought back from one goal down to claim an emphatic 4-1 win at home to Ampthill Town on Saturday in the Spartan South Midlands Division One. The result looked to be in danger when they went in 1-0 down at half time, but a second half rally from their attacking duo meant sure that they would take all three points.
A strong start is becoming a good regularity for Buckingham as they try to get control of the game from the first minute. They couldn't get an early goal however, despite dominating much of the game for the opening half an hour. The closest they came was when Ben Acquaye hit the post, but that was one of many chances that they had to open the scoring. They were caught out by a long ball in the end as they failed to deal with it and the Ampthill striker went through and finished easily.
Buckingham continued to look for a goal before half time but failed to break through and went into half time a goal down. As they came out for the second half, there was suddenly something about Buckingham that got them past the defensive line on more occasions. A long ball to Acquaye saw him take on his man and lay it back for Robbie Carter, who finished simply behind the keeper.
The floodgates opened after that as fellow striker Sid Hawkins scored a header from close range to take the lead on Buckingham’s way to victory. Only ten minutes after taking the lead, Athletic saw themselves further in front as again Hawkins was on the scoresheet. A great corner from Jack Menday found him in the box, leaving a free header for the forward as they started to run away with it.
The same combination as the first goal was there again as Acquaye found Carter as the two youngsters showed their maturity, with the latter finishing well into the far corner, sealing a great comeback for the side. With a busy schedule coming up, and the game now out of sight, it gave manager, Mark Carter, the opportunity to rest the front men as they saw the game out to claim a 4-1 victory.
