Buckingham Athletic produced an emphatic 5-0 victory over local rivals Winslow United at home on Saturday to secure a double over them for the second season in a row. The score also means that they have scored 13 goals in their last four meetings with the enemy, and conceding just one. The win on Saturday creates a 19 point gap over Winslow and aids their bid for a top half finish with just three games to go.
The most pleasing thing for Buckingham was that their was five different scorers, showing they have goals from many players on the pitch, not just with the forwards. The first came just five minutes in and from the penalty spot. It was Jack Menday who got the ball rolling with the strike to send Athletic on their. The game never failed to disappoint for the home supporters as they scored again just two minutes later from Ryan Marsden, his first of the season.
The score kept looking more pleasing for Buckingham as they went on to increase their lead to three on the half hour mark. The goal gave them some breathing space between the sides and it was the captain on this occasion who got the goal. Menday’s corner was found by Dan Staley who flicked it beyond the keeper from the near post.
Just before half time the lead was increased to four as the top scorer for the club finally got in on the act. Robbie Carter scored in the reverse fixture back in December and has been in fine form this campaign, and his goal on Saturday put him one short of the 20 mark this season. As the whistle came, it may as well have been for full time with Athletic wrapping it up early on. There was next to no chance for a comeback.
The second half began just the same as the first as Buckingham scored another to embarrass their neighbours. Winslow couldn’t contain them and it was another youngster who got the fifth as Ben Acquaye got on the score sheet just five minutes in. There was a chance for a sixth as well from the penalty spot again, but this time Menday couldn’t convert, but it didn’t matter anyway.
Buckingham saw the game off without conceding and secured an outstanding win over their rivals. There are now just two weeks left of the season in which Buckingham can try to finish 10th, but this win may inspire a late run of form to end the season on a high.
